I was 35 and I had one miscarriage, then I had another one at 36, and one more at 37. My new doctor tested me and told me I was low on estrogen so he gave me clomid and I took it for 5 months and I was finally able to hold my pregnancy. But there was a problem after the birth of my beautiful daughter. The doctor came into my hospital room to tell me we had a problem with my daughter. He told me that she was born with a recessive gene problem and she could die on us and it was not my age that caused the gene problem.
First of all I think if any of you were able go conceive before taking Clomid I suggest you have the doctor test you and your husband for recessive genes and make sure they test you for all possible genetic genes. Most doctors are not thinking when it comes to the gene problem and all they do is just hand over the drugs without thinking. After my daughter was born one of the doctors had mentioned how many genetic genes that they had seen in that same year my daughter was born. That was around the time we started with the fertility doctors. Also, right after taking the drug, I ended up with some cysts and a few years later I ended up with breast cancer.
For your health and your babies health make sure you are careful with taking any kind of a fertility drug, especially if you were able to conceive and had miscarriages, and then started on the Clomid. As a matter of fact the first thing I asked the doctor was the possibility of getting breast cancer by taking the drug, since it produces such a high level of estrogen. The answer he gave me was "It has not been proven as of yet."
Go to the internet and start researching all that you can on fertility drugs and do not count of the doctors to give you all of the answers.

I saw this site and I wish I had seen and read it before I started all of this frustrating fertility process. I have been trying to get pregnant for 7 years. I have done the testing, HSG and others. Everything came out ok. All my test were normal. Everything seemed to be ok. I never had a normal period in my whole life.
I have always been active and I am not an over eater. In one year I went from a size 5 to a size 22. My Dr. couldn't tell me why I was gaining the weight and once again all my test for Diabetes and Thyroid came back clean. After 5 years of hearing " We dont know why you aren't getting pregnant", my PCP finally referred me to a REAL fertility Dr. I felt like, finally I would get some answers, but low and behold...more testing.
I told them I have gone through all this testing already and I didn't know why I was taking them again. The OBGYN saw how frustrated I was getting and decided to put me on Clomid. First she induced my period's with progesterone pills and on days 5-9 I took 50mg's a day of Clomid. I didn't have much of a reaction from the Clomid other than the usual hot flashes and headaches. My husband and I had intercourse every other day up to day 20 of the cycle. I took the pregnancy test a few weeks later and it was sadly negative. I called the Dr. and told her the news and she said they would start me on another cycle of clomid and this time they would up the dose to 100mg's and go from there.
After unsuccessfully going through all the steps again, No pregnancy!!!
A few weeks later I had notice that my mood swings were getting worse and I felt a lack of containment of emotions. I had a really bad day at work and when I came home, I broker down. I started crying hysterically and making no sense to my husband. I spent the next week in bed. I felt like my life needed to end and was having the worse depression imaginable. My husband had no idea what to do. After feeling like I wanted to kill myself, I called my mom and she came immediately. We called my Dr. and explained what was happening and she said that I was having an extreme reaction to the clomid. My mom took me to the hospital to have me checked out. I hadn't slept or ate for 4 days. On top of having the reaction to the clomid, I was dehydrated and had major sleep deprivation. All things were adding to what I thought was a nervous breakdown. The nurse that was assisting me at the hospital said that she had the same reaction to the clomid and not to worry, that after a few days it would be out of my system and things would be back to normal. She was right. I am fine now.
Even a year later, it still brings tears to my eyes to type all this out. I had no one to talk to and on one that told me this could happen. I thought I was going crazy! But it is very serious. If I had only known or had a GOOD Dr. to tell me this might happen, then I could have saved allot of heartache.
So a year later, no babies. I am working with an Infertility Dr. now here in San Diego and she has me on metformin. We will see what happens!!! Keep praying for me and I will do the same for you. And know this...God will only give you what he thinks you can handle and if having your own children is not what his plan is, know that there are MANY, MANY kids out there looking for someone like you to invite them into your heart!!! GOOD LUCK!

First, thank you for providing this web site. While I hate to hear that others have had similar side effects, it’s a little comforting to know that I am not alone, or “being a wimp!” We have a beautiful son who is now 2. We were so lucky in getting pregnant on the first try, so when thinking about baby number two, we did not think we’d have any trouble conceiving. After 1 year of trying, the doctor determined that I was not ovulating. This is my fourth cycle on Clomid. I ovulated the first cycle, not the second, so they increased the dose from 50 to 100. On month three, I started getting horrible headaches during days 5-9 (when I was taking the medication) and then severe bloating, IBS, and cramping, probably around the time that I was ovulating. While I did not get pregnant on cycle 3, I had a hormone level that reflected a “chemical pregnancy”. I am on day 10 of cycle 4 – the headaches have been severe and my mood declining. I’ve had such a bad headache the past week, that the doctor prescribed a p ain medicine. The medicine worked, and it was the first time in days that I have felt semi-normal. I try to remind myself to keep my eye on the prize and to remember why I am putting myself, and my husband, through what sometimes seems like “torture”. Good luck to everyone out there.

Here's my story to add to Clomid's Side Effects & Comments Album
I am 28 years old and DH and I had been TTC #2 for 18 months. After having all the fertility tests, my doctor informed me that Clomid would be our only hope. I took 50mg Clomid (the generic form) on cycle days 5-9. Now, before taking this, I knew that my body tends to overreact to any drug I take, but I didn't think much of it...I just wanted to become pregnant again.
When I finished the pills and had no side effects, I was so relieved. I must add that I did have one side effect, and that was no CM. Then, 2 days before my temp rose, I had terrible cramping. I realized I may be ovulating, so DH and I had intercourse that night and the night afterwards.
Closer to the end of my cycle I got extremely moody and began gaining weight. Then, my period was 3 days late, so I took a HPT, which was a BFN. Two days later, at 17DPO, I went to my doctor to see what we could do to start my next cycle. That was when I found out that I am pregnant! My first round of clomid worked.
HOWEVER, I must warn anyone taking this medicine what happened to me after this. I hope I don't scare anyone, but I wish I had known this could happen...it would have saved me my health. Almost a week after I discovered I really was pregnant, I moved the wrong way too quickly and felt terrible pains on my right side. At first, I thought I'd pulled a muscle, but then an hour later I had to lie down. When I got up an hour or two later to use the bathroom, I discovered that I couldn't stand up straight. I stayed on the couch for hours - 16 hours, to be exact.
Finally, at 3:30am I ended up being sent to the ER where I had lots of tests done. The doctors kept telling me that my appendix had ruptured or was about to rupture and that I needed surgery ASAP, regardless of the fact that I was then 5 weeks pregnant. So, I had the surgery. Before I went in, I told the surgeon to not touch the baby, no matter what. She told me that she wouldn't go near my uterus, but that my OB would be there in case anything needed to be done with my reproductive organs. Unfortunately, my OB was on vacation and his partner, who I'd never met, was the one in charge.
When I woke up from surgery, I was told that my appendix had been perfectly fine, but they removed it anyway. What had actually happened was that I had something called "hyperstimulation syndrome" and that what had ruptured had been an extremely large ovarian cyst. My DH was given certain choices about my surgery while I was under anesthesia. Like, he was asked if the cyst should be removed. He was told that the cyst was part of my Corpus Luteum, so if the cyst were removed, I would miscarry. He was also asked if they could remove my entire ovary (which is the only working ovary I've got) but, I would miscarry then too. My DH told the doctor to leave everything where it is, but was warned I may have to have another surgery. DH explained that it would be easier for me to have a second surgery than to lose the pregnancy. So, they finished to surgery according to what DH told them, thank goodness.
It's been over a month since my surgery, I am still not completely healed, but, thankfully, I am still pregnant. I am now considered a high-risk pregnancy, since I was put under anesthesia. I now have to see my OB/GYN, my surgeon, and a parinatologist every month. We're still not sure the baby is alright (we won't know if the anesthesia affected my baby untill we can see all of his/her organs in another 6 weeks).
Clomid is truly a wonderful thing, but I think everyone should be warned of some of the medical conditions that may form because of it. Also, if anyone has to have surgery during the first trimester, please make sure that your husband or whoever is with you at the time know what your wishes would be. I am so fortunate that my DH stayed calm and didn't let anyone talk him into doing something horrible to me.
I wish everyone the best of luck.

    my clomid side effects
I'm 40 years old and we have been ttc our second child for 1 year. My ob started me on 50 mg of clomid this month, days 3-7. Today is day 7. Frequent headaches, night hot flashes, and moodiness having been coming and going all of these days. On day 8 however, I felt a throbbing sensation where I would normally feel myself ovulating. Haven't read this anywhere and surely I wouldn't be ovulating this soon! I'm going today to get an ovulating kit and start testing. We're only going to try clomid for a couple of months, and if I'm not pg by then, we've decided it's not meant for us to have another child. It is more difficult to get pregnant when your older and I guess if we don't, then we probably shouldn't.
    TP

    Hi TP
The throbbing could be from an overstimulated ovary so be certain to let your doctor know about it.
The severe side effects you are experiencing are from large fluctuations in hormones which your body is unable to offset.
That's not necessarily true that if you don't get pregnant using clomid after 40 then you probably shouldn't, but you have to follow what feels right for you.
If you need help restoring hormone balance after this clomid experience,
I may be able to help you!
Lots of love and positive thoughts that you are successful this cycle+++

    Hi Momma Kath,
I am on Day 3 of Clomid.
So far no apparent side effects.
I wanted to share a tip with the readers.
I've heard that the active ingredient in
Robitussin (Guaifenesin) is conducive for good cervical mucos.
I talked to the pharmacist and he said that the
    cough syrup has only 100mg.
There's a new over the counter product
called Mucinex that has 600mg of Guaifenesin
    in an extended release tablet.
    It's really helping!
It was $9.99 for 20 tablets.
I'm noticing a LOT more cervical mucos.
Hope to have ++++++ news soon,
    Maralee :-)

    Ladies,
    Just wanted to mention that
Guaifenesin will merely thin the mucus
you already have, it will not help create more.
    Love
    Momma Kath

    Hi,
I started the 50mg of Clomid last month and took it days 5-9.
I did not have any side effect other than severe headaches.
After I finished the last pill I started having severe cramps.
Thought that I had ovulated but tests said no.
Had u/s done to find fluid in my uterus and the Dr. said
it was probably from a cyst that had just ruptured.
Is this normal? He said that because I had a cyst,
he thought, that if he upped the dose to 100mg that I would get pregnant.
So I started the 100mg dose and today is cd 5 and
so far just had SEVERE headache and mild cramping.
What else could the fluid had been?
Am I supposed to get these cysts?
Since I did get the cyst does that increase my chances of getting pregnant
this time since he said it stimulated my ovary?
I have read a lot about women having miscarriages so does Clomid increase that risk?
I have never had a miscarriage but now am afriad a little to keep trying to get pregnant
because of all the stories I have read where the women miscarried.
My Dr. does not seem to be worried but I am.
I want a baby so bad yet I am patient and willing to go through a lot to have it happen.
Thanks to this site. It has brought me so much relief reading some of the stories.

    Hi All,
Trying to have a baby now for 3 years with no success.
I am on my second clomid treatment this month it was 100mg.
I just had my IUI done yesterday and today I can hardly walk
from the stomach pain and I feel exhausted.
Last month I noticed similar pain but it wasn't so bad
so I didn't make a note of it but
now I am starting to wonder if it is the clomid or the IUI procedure
itself is causing this unbearable pain.
worried and tired but dying to have a baby!

Hi! I am taking clomid for the 2nd time. The first time was a success.
The first month I took 50mg starting on day 5 and conceived.
I do not remember having any side effects at all. Now, 2 years later I am at it again.
The first month I was on 50mg (starting on day 3) with only slight moodieness and I did not ovulate.
So, on came the progesterone pills to start my cycle and I am now on 100mg.
I have one more dose left and I can feel the moodiness already! But other than that
I am having no other side effects. Keeping my fingers crossed that it will work this time!
Good luck for all of those trying to conceive and keep your fingers crossed for me!

    Clomid Story
    I don't have much of a story yet -
I have just finished my first month of clomid starting on day 8
of my cycle as I didn't get to the Dr in time before I got my period and
he didn't want to waste another month. I have diagnosed PCOS and
in the last 19mths of TTC I have had my period maybe 6 times at most.
I was started on 50mg of Clomid & I just got my bloodwork done yesterday and
I did ovulate so that's positive. I am now 4 DPO and am waiting to see whether
I get my period in the next 5-7 days or if I am (hopefully!) pregnant.
I didn't get too many side effects although I noticed some hot flushing mainly
at night and for about 3 days I was extremely emotional and angry over nothing.
My poor DH! He's fairly understanding which is good!! Anyways here's to hoping!!
I love everyone's stories - they are a real source of encouragement!
    Cheers
    Jade

    Clomid Experience
    Hi Momma Kath!
First of all, I just want to thank you for hosting such a
wonderful site where women with similar fertility obstacles
can share and receive knowledge and encouragement.
I wrote to you about my fertility problems a couple of months ago
and since then my GYN has diagnosed me with PCOS.
She prescribed Provera and my first Clomid cycle on CD 3/7.
The side effects of the Clomid weren't too terrible.
The hot flashes were mainly at night.
(My DH froze without complaint as I blasted the air all night!)
I was a bit moody, but only had one day of extreme mood swings.
I am now anxiously awaiting my appointment with my MD tomorrow.
It will be good to find out that I successfully ovulated this month...
It will be GREAT to find out that we're PG!
I'll keep you posted. Wish me luck.

    clomid experience
I'm 34 and found out I have endometriosis in October.
I had laser treatment and took Lupron shots for 5 months.
Then I wouldn't start so my doctor gave me the shot to start me
and the next month gave me 50 mg of Clomid.
This is my third month and not pg yet.
I have noticed feeling cold and then hot, especially at night.
Also I've gained weight, about 10 pounds in 4 months,
though I am also newly on Effexor since March.
I have also had migraine headaches about
every two weeks around ovulation and my period.
My doctor just upped my dose to 100 mg for month 4,
hoping this will be the lucky month.

    Clomid Experience
Well thought I would share my side effects on Clomid 50mg.
I started taking it on 5-9 I'm on day 18 now and I have had
cramping since day 9 and we have had sex everyday since day 10.
I'm still having some cramping on day 18 and I'm not sure if
clomid can continue to make me cramp this far into my cycle.
We have been trying for well over a year now for our second child
our first was so easy getting pregnant.

    Hi. I had a really embarrassing side effect that I didn't want to post;
however, I'm concerned that maybe someone else might have it
and will be as scared as I was.
I'm 31 and have been TTC #1 for 13 months.
We miscarried twice within that time.
In March we had the last miscarriage and required a D&C to remove it.
I have not ovulated since then on my own.
After taking a break for the summer to scuba dive and take time for me,
I started my first round of clomid at 50 mg. For the first 3 days,
nothing happened except I got kind of hot on the 3rd night or 4th morning.
Everything went fine on the 4th day (Friday)
until I went to get a pedicure after work.
I got a little dizzy and then all of a sudden, I couldn't speak.
I couldn't say anything except jibber jabber.
I could think something in my head but not get it to come out.
This happened for a litt! le while and then
I could spit out uh huh or huh uh, but not much more.
I finally got myself home and was in tears because I was so scared. I was abl
e to speak half sentences by then, but couldn't finish them.
I would actually forget the sentence in the middle of my thought
and couldn't remember what I was going to say.
I just cried and blubbered strange phrases and got super frustrated.
My DH actually started researching clomid online
to see if he could find anyone else who had such a symptom.
He didn't find anything very close but was convinced it was from the clomid.
I finally calmed down a bit after seeing him so concerned
and the talking came a little easier.
The next morning, things were a lot better and I could mostly talk,
but a while after I took my 5th pill,
I couldn't speak in complete sentences anymore again.
didn't have the complete jibber jabber,
but could only do partial sentences.
The really bad symptoms only lasted about half an hour,
but I had difficulties with a word here or there all weekend.
We had to cancel our plans with our friends
because I was so embarrassed about not being able to talk.
Unfortunately, since it started on Friday night I couldn't reach my OBGYN.
  • By Sunday, the odd not-talking symptoms were much better.
  • By Monday, they were pretty much gone unless I got frustrated.
We left for a trip on Monday and I gained my speech back in full.
the time we got back from the trip,
I was just excited that I had ovulated and
had pretty much forgotten about the whole thing.
Then I had all the symptoms of pregnancy
and didn't think it would matter that I had the odd speech symptom.
    Unfortunately, at 9dpo AF came.
So I had to ask the doctor about the symptoms to make sure
he'd actually want to put me on this strange medicine again.
Of course, he decided that was NOT a good idea and now we have to see
if the single round of clomid
tricked my mind into ovulating again in general.
If not, I have to go to a specialist to find out what else is available.
I hope this helps someone else.
Heidi TTC#1 and no longer able to use clomid
hi there i have been reading other people experiences they sound similar to mine.
I had my 1st child 2 years 3months ago after trying for 3 years, I had one miscarriage in between. There was no explanation for why I wasn"t getting pregnant and we were about to start IVF when I fell pregnant. We have been trying for our second child for 13 months all tests have been normal except for a low progesterone and my doctor suggested clomid 100mg for 4 cycles we are on our first cycle day 16. I'm not sure whether i have ovulated or not I have had mood swings , headaches and lower abdo pain throughout.
It is very frustrating I am 37 and feel like time is running out. So here is hoping that this works

    April 16, 2007
I have just finished my first round or clomid 50mg and I know what my mother said hot flashes are horrible. Being I have a seven year old son conceived naturally the first month of trying. My doctor did all the testing before trying clomid. My husband is ok but my progesterone levels are low so hopefully clomid will work. I am so worried about multiple pregnancy doc said the odds are very low, but if that is god s plan so be it. I wish every one luck with their ache for a child and hope next month I can post a pregnancy announcement. Thanks for your time.

    April 03, 2007
My husband and I have been TTC for one year now, and we are on our third cycle of 50 mg Clomid. I say my husband and I because he is sure going through this with me. I have experienced HOT FLASHES! Oh the hot flashes. My poor husband, one minute I am dying of heat, pushing him away and kicking off the blankets, the next minute I am stealing all the blankets and cuddling as close as I can get because I'm so cold from the drying sweat. I used to make fun of my mom when she was going through menopause, but now? I feel for her. I have noticed mood swings, but more on the first cycle than now. Maybe my body is getting used to it? Not fun, but at least my body is working now, and I have a little chance of having my own family. It's almost worth all the mood swings and the hot flashes, just to know that at least now there's a chance! Keep your fingers crossed!
