Well, My husband And I have been trying for over a year.
We are on the second month of clomid and my hopes have been sky high.
I will have to admit that my mood swings have been "out of control".
I can honestly say at times I wonder why my husband is still here.
And the hot flashes are crazy. I spoke with my Dr. yesterday after he
received my bloodwork he has me do routinely on day 21(to check my hormone levels).
Bad news, my progesterone levels were way to high.
And sure enough that horrible pain on my rights side is more than likely a cyst.
So, I have an ultrasound set up for next week.
The worst part, no more clomid he said. I feel like everything just blew up in front of me.
My periods never used to be more than 28 days and now for the past 2 months I'm going like 31 days?????
I feel like the past 2 months of crazy moods and hot flashes have been for nothing!
I'm scared, what will my options be next if I can't take clomid??
Well, it was very comforting to read everyone's experiences,
I don't feel so alone.
Thanks for letting me vent and good luck to everyone!
Julie

Dear Julie
The fact that you have severe hot flashes, mood swings and cyst would suggest a hormone imbalance.
Clomid triggers a hormone imbalance in the hopes that you harvest more eggs than normal, in your case
(and many others) the side effects do not outweigh the benefits.
Herbs are a natural way to balance hormones and ensure ovulation.
The other point I want to make here is that if you are thrown into a hormone imbalance before ovulation,
it is unreasonable to expect your hormones to level out so that you can support early pregnancy.
Unfortunately clomd can set you up for disaster.
Getting pregnant can sometimes be only half the TTC challenge,
you want to stay pregnant through the first trimester until the baby takes over production of the hormones.
Hormone balance is crucial for fertility and maintaining a healthy pregnancy.
After working with many TTCers over the years I have found Herbs for Her works!
Herbs for Her is a powerful fertility combination as it restores hormone balance.
I have them packaged in convenient cycle packs with instructions.
Even with regular cycles you may be harboring an imbalance that can affect your fertility.
The herbal approach to balancing hormones
(vs. chemicals like birth control pills, clomid and provera which have no chance of correcting an imbalance)
is long lasting.
I just had to add my two cents.

Im 41 and took my first Clomid pill today!
50mg, I think.
I was expecting to have every single possible side effect listed
with the prescription! But so far I havent noticed anything.
After reading some of the other womens comments on this website,
it looks like the side effects often dont start until
AFTER the last (5th for me) pill has been taken?
Hot flashes, I think I can deal with.
I was more worried especially about the mood swings and nausea,
not to mention the other side effects listed
(vomiting, headaches, dizziness, breast tenderness, bloating, etc.).
Im preparing for the worst, hoping for the best!

I'm now on my 2nd cycle of Clomid and praying for a miracle.
In my 1st cycle of Clomid I developed a fairely large cyst
on my ovary which meant I had to wait until the
cysts ruptured for further assistance.
Two months after my 1st cycle of Clomid
(b/c of the cyst), the dc wanted me to do the Clomid Challenge Test.
This involved, day 3 an FSH reading (results: 16.8) was done and
began to take 100 mg for five days (cycle days 5 - 9).
Another FSH reading was done on day 10
(haven't received that reading).
They also did another ultrasound which revealed
Clomid may have given me another cysts.
No more Clomid for me if it's going to give me cysts.
They are really looking at my FSH levels.
My levels are slightly elevated,
which concerns me and the dc.
Elevated FSH levels are considered
to be a sign of Ovarian Failure.
I hope and pray this is not the case!!!!!

I stopped taking birth control pills in
December and then I started having irregular cycles;
45 days, 90 days, 35 days, 60 days.
(Before taking birth control pills two years ago, my cycle was between 30 - 35 days.)
I have been charting my temperature in the morning and it showed
I wasn't ovulating. In July, my doctor prescribed me with duphaston,
twice a day, for seven days. My period came 3 days after the treatment
--normal regular period. Then I started taking 50mg of clomid from the
second day of my period; twice a day for five days.
Side effect: always feeling like I was in a fog,
very very tired like I've ran a marathon,
I had blurry vision, and the worst part,
had a lot of gas.
Pretty embarassing!
My husband said, hey, now you know how the guys feel!
Once I stopped taking it,
the symptoms disappeared almost immediately.
On day 12, we went for an ultrasound,
we saw a follicle about 18-20 mm in right ovary.
Yay! In my left ovary, there is another follicle,
much bigger than 20mm,
the doctor told me it is just a fluid filled follicle
and it should rupture any time. Well, I sure hope so!
I then received a Pregnyl injection to release the egg
and was told to *baby dance* 30 hours later.
So right now, we are just waiting... :-)

I am having a terrible time on Chlomid.
Been married 2 years, 27yrs old and
trying to conceive for the entire time with no luck.
I had my second lap in June 03 and
had endometriosis everywhere
along with blocked tubes and a cyst.
I began 50mg Chlomid in July
and just finished my second dose.
I have had severe hot and cold flashes.
I got a terrible blinding migraine yesterday
and have what I call a
'migraine hangover' headache today.
Anyone else experience terrible migraines
while taking this drug?
I don't mean headaches...but migraines.
I may discontinue the use of this drug.
Thanks!

This is the third time in my life I have taken Clomid.
I started taking them this time about a week ago
and those oh so familiar hot flashes are back.
The first time I took them was about 18 years ago
and I started with the one pill a day on day 5-9 and
went all the way to the max amount per day,
which was four, for about two years with nothing more
than just the usual side effects, hot flashes, pain during o,
and mood swings. After a couple of years of Clomid
my ob/gyn sent me to the fertility specialist where
I spent the next five years doing the shots, ultra sounds,
and egg retrieval, having the DH's semen forced in the eggs,
putting the embryos back in me with the assisted hatching process,
spending 12 days in intensive care for ovarian hyper stimulation,
and on and on. The good news is that five years ago
I did have a wonderful little boy, two months premature,
with slight nerve damage in his brain (he cannot walk unassisted)
who is the light of my life and would gladly do all of that again to have
another if my insurance would pay for it again.
Since the insurance has change I tried the Clomid
the second time when my son was two and nearly
ended up back in the hospital again for the hyper stimulation thing
which amazed me since I was just taking the one pill a day and had
nothing happen before when I was taking it years ago.
Now three years later I am trying again. I am now 38 and at age 47
I will give up and just cherish my very best friend, my son.
Good luck to all, it is worth every bit of it if you really want
the most precious thing you have ever had in your life.

I read all the Clomid entries and didn't see any like mine,
so I thought I should post.
When I was ttc 3 years ago,
I took 50 mg for one month with no result and
side effects of moodiness and some hot flashes.
Next month I was upped to 100 mg, still no egg,
but now I was feeling psychotic.
I didn't act on it, but I wanted to kill people,
luckily not my husband, but usually random strangers
who were being stupid! I didn't want to try 150.
I was resigned that I would have to explore other methods,
but my ob gently talked me into it.
The side effects were not quite as bad,
and at my ultrasound on day 14 we saw one egg.
That egg became my daughter Jessica!
She is now 2 and we're back on the Clomid rollarcoaster.
I took 100 mg for one month, no results.
Then I have taken 4 cycles of 150 with strange results,
so Clomid and I are parting ways and
I have to see a fertility specialist in 2 weeks.
Right now I am on day 13 of my last cycle of Clomid,
I believe, based on temp charts that I ovulated on day
6 due to a mistimed Clomid treatment last month.
Now my temp has gone up, in the triphasic pattern
that it did when I got pregnant for Jess, but I am also bleeding,
so I have no idea....
I am now on my second month of Clomid/IUI treatment
and waiting to see if the second try was successful.
My first round of Clomid was taken on c/d 5-9 with
no side effects except for severe bloating and pain
in my pelvic/abdominal area.
I havent heard any other women talking about
that side effect so I dont know if its the Clomid
causing it or something else.
I did conceive that month but miscarried almost right away.
Now that Ive done my second IUI,
Im again feeling that abdominal pain
but it isnt as severe as it was the first cycle.
When I went in for the ultrasound,
there were two mature follicles,
one in each ovary,
and several not-quite-mature ones also.
I took an ovulation predictor test in the morning the day
before our IUI but I think that the actual ovulation
happened less than 24 hours later as the eggs had
just released before my ultrasound.
Im thinking about taking the tests both in the morning
and the evening next month if this attempt doesnt work
but Im praying that it will! Whatever the stresses,
Im confident that it will all be worth it eventually.

Hi Everyone,
I really enjoyed reading the comments posted on this web site.
It was nice to find out that the side effects
I experienced appear to be very common.
I am on round 3 - 150mg from day 5 -10.
This last round in particular I experienced bad dizzy spells,
and drastic mood swings on all three doses.
I went from 50mg to 100mg to 150mg then no more!
Im 26 years old my husband and I have been trying
for about a year now.
Im crossing my fingers this time will do it!!
My OB/GYN has only prescribed 3 rounds;
I have no clue what to expect next,
Can anyone pride some insight here?
Good luck to all
Patiently optimistic!

I got pregnant first time with clomid
Just wanted to tell everyone that is on clomid GOOD LUCK .
I got pregant on 50mg on first dose .
I have a little boy who is now 15 months .
GOOD LUCK and
i hope that your wish of having a baby comes true!!!

I am 29 and have been trying to conceive for a long time now.
I was put on clomid at 50mg because I was complaining
for several months that my stomach was bloating after ovulation,
I was crying all the time.
Only after I had had a chemical miscarriage
was my doctor willing to run a blood test.
They took a blood test 7 days past ovulation to
find I was only a 2.3 when you need to be over a 3.3
to show you have ovulated on progesterone levels.
So the First month on Clomid my tests results were 12.7
so we assume its working.
The hot flashes were real bad but the subsided
the second and third month.
The bloating was still bad after ovulation.
After three months of failure my Dr has tacked on
one more month so I am on month 4 without consultation.
I would also like to complain that I was never told about clomid.
Just here is a prescription good luck.
They never explained what its used for,
why and what side effects it offered.
Even after three failed cycles and i asked if they
should be worried about enlarged ovaries or cysts
she said try one more month then we will meet.
And when I asked why am i on this days 5-10 when
its most often perscriped 5-9,
I was told just do what I say.
There doesn't seem to be enough monitoring.
My husband has not even been tested.
There doesn't seem to be enough concern placed on infertility.
I often feel like the Dr is wasting my times and my eggs

Well i have took clomid nine times all together and every time
i get pregnant the third month.
I do experience hot flashes that come and go through out
the day and it does cause acne as well.
When i do ovulate i know it because my stomach hurts
it feels like i have a dozen large eggs inside me and
intercourse hurts as well when i ovulate with clomid
but the doctor said tht was normal as well.
Hope this in-put helps someone.

I just finished my first cycle of Clomid.
It was prescribed for day 3-7.
Today is day 8 and things aren't too bad.
Some hot flashes---but nothing unbearable.
Today I have some cramping, but I'm not sure
if it could be due to the Clomid or not.
I have also noticed a lot more discharge.
Is this only happening to me,
or has this happened to anyone else?
Otherwise, I must say it has been a breeze.

I am 34 and my husband and I have been TTC for over 2 years.
My RE put me on Clomid a year ago -
I only went one cycle at that time and had no side effects
other than severe pain around ovulation.
After about 10 months of trying without the Clomid,
I have started again - but this time the side-effects are horrible!
I have migraines EVERY day and hot flashes almost every hour.
The hot flashes wake me up at night and then I get insomnia.
I have noticed a change in my vision (but it seemed to have
started before I took the Clomid this go 'round),
but my RE says any vision change should only be temporary
and if I have problems when I am not actually taking Clomid,
then I should go see my eye doctor.
I am not sure that I should be taking the vision change so lightly...
Hopefully, I will not miss my LH surge this time
as I am scheduled for AI...
I missed it last month because
I was trusting the Ovulation kit and not my body...
The kits are not foolproof!
I have not noticed any mood swings -
I am just plain mean all the time now.
This is NOT fun at all.

Hi this is my first month on clomid. I have been prescribed 50mg tablets.
The only side effects for me have been cramping and
weird fluttering feelings in my abdomen - from about day 10 - 14.
The nurse at the infertility clinic told me that this could mean I was ovulating.
I am having a blood test done on day 21.
Yesterday I had an appointment for a pre-operative assessment for a laprosocy -
and was told that my doctor had made a mistake and I would have to wait until
the first three cycles were completed.
I was pleased about this - however after having an hsg -
which showed that I had one 'blocked' tube?
I wonder if this treatment will be successful.
Is it normal to be prescribed clomid when there could be other problems.
I have secondard infertility after a caeserean birth six years ago
(she was a nice suprise - conceived naturally)
I am 28 years old and have been trying to get pregnant for two years.
I have found your site very inspiring -
and hope to be able to post a more hopeful letter next time.
Beth

Hi Beth
I'm so glad you are enjoying the site {{{hugs}}}
Clomid is prescribed as the first attempt
so yes they prescribe it even before they've ruled out other problems.
I'm not a big fan of clomid but you are young so if it causes you any problems,
you should be able to bounce back.
I'm a big fan of herbs and their long term benefits
whereas clomid overstimulates a couple of hormones.
Also, I am finding abdominal exercise
to be our best offense towards remaining fertile and a thriving libido.
We tend to store fat there and this encourages old estrogen to linger.
Not good for fertility.
You may want to try Pilates to strengthen the pelvic girdle, which can lock up (Psoas Muscle a/k/a Pelvic Girdle) and create infertility.
